SIMPSON BAY BEACH
Sit and quietly watch the waters edge gently lap the soft white sand. Azure and turquoise hues span far into the calm, flat, distant Caribbean Sea. Halfway between the Dutch Bridge and the airport I escape the blazing midday sun under lofty palms while examining the local school kids out for their swim lessons that day. Empty. Serene. Restful. Calm.
Probably one of the Island's best guarded secrets and unlike most beaches on island, Simpson Bay Beach is unbelievably quiet. This mile long beach offers pure tranquility from end to end. If you're the type of beach-goer looking for no crowds -- this is the beach for you.
In fact, it’s been said Simpson Bay Beach residents seem to have done something “mystical” to keep the crowds of people away. Who knew? Weekends during season however? People are finding out about one of the Dutch Side’s BEST beaches!
View
Albeit ‘a little’ airplane noise, one can witness a bit of the impressive plane take-offs and landings facing West at nearby Princess Juliana International Airport. On a clear day most positions on this beach offer stunning views of some other neighboring Islands; St Kitts, Saba and St Eustatius. (“Statia”) Turning Eastward you can spy the Dutch Bridge on Airport Road raise and lower daily; allowing mega yacht traffic access and egress to it’s protective lagoon. Off season an empty Simpson Bay stares back at you but high season it’s packed with beautiful vessels one only dreams of commandeering.
And.. the occasional topless dancer from nearby Golden Eyes or Bada Bing can sometimes be spotted tanning ‘au-natural’ on top, in case you were bringing the kids and wanted to know in advance :)
Access
Access to this beach is primarily from the Airport road. Turn off the road towards the beach at the Simpson Bay Pharmacy (identified by the enormous green cross). Walk straight to cross over the beach road (cemetery on left, basketball courts on right) and onto Williams Drive, Roberts Drive -- or any of the beach streets; they all access Simpson Bay Beach, all the way down to Karakter’s Beach Bar.
Amenities and Services
None! That’s the magic of Simpson Bay Beach. Although only a five minute drive from the airport and directly accessible via foot or car to banks, small food markets, a large grocery store, a pharmacy, several nightclubs and a gas station, “bring your own” remains the theme here. Bring your own water, food, chairs, etc. We love bringing our BBQs and hammocks and setting up for a full day picnic party! You can however, always rent a Kayak at TriSport, right next to The Simpson Bay Bridge. (website) www.trisportsxm.com, (email) trisport@caribserve.net or +1.721.545.4384 Or why not give a paddle board a go from Rebel 7 Surf Shop (also conveniently located near the Dutch Bridge in Simpson Bay above Sky Market!)
Hotels and Restaurants
You can spend your entire vacation on Simpson Bay Beach and not be bothered with ANYTHING. A five minute drive from the airport, (in no traffic, of course) come find the only commercial ventures on this beach: Karakters Beach Bar, Mary’s Boon Beach Resort and Spa, The Horney Toad Guest House, Hotel Azure and The Turquoise Shell Inn.
