Grand Case Beach
By Kilee Mercuur
Most people think of Grand Case as THE place in French St. Martin for fine dining amongst the little restaurants, inns and boutiques that dot the shoreline spanning several miles of beach. As such, it is frequently overlooked as a beach destination, being a really great place to spend the day. If tranquility and calm water is what you seek, along with a breathtaking beach, get to Grand Case bright and early to enjoy such serenity. The early mornings in Grand Case have been known to inspire sessions of deep meditation, especially helpful after an evening of, shall we say, overindulgence. The days here are slow an lazy, perfect for a long lunch under a beach umbrella with a cocktail in hand. And as the evening approaches, there’s A never-to-be-missed sunset is in store for you, the finest and most memorable time to snap a photo of your full enjoyment of a blissful day at this seaside village nestled into the cove that makes Grand Case.
Getting to Grand Case is a bit of an adventure! First, find your way to the Grand Case Airport, (the only airport on the French side) there are dozens of signs, and you will easily be led on a tiny two way street which eventually meanders into the heart of the town of Grand Case; a Euro-Caribbean haven filled with tiny boutiques, creperies, cafes and Lolos, similar to those found in the South of France. Parking is available in limited amount and scattered along the road, just be sure to lock your car.
If your drive to Grand Case beach has given you an appetite, do not fear, an array of food is near. Enjoy a savory Caribbean inspired meal of fried plantain and barbequed chicken and conclude with a scoop of authentic home made coconut ice cream. If you’ve forgotten you’re swimming trunks or little wrap, walk along the town’s tiny one-way street and you’ll be finely greeted with colorful choices at suitable prices.
All the restaurants and inns on the beach offer colorful beach chairs or chaise lounges and beach umbrellas for a nominal fee, however all French beaches belong to the public, so you are welcome to bring your towel and pick a spot. Sunscreen is always a must, and if you are on your own, a light snack, and a beach chair/umbrella are suggested especially if you plan to spend all day on the beach itself. Euros are standard currency of choice, but US dollars are accepted at most eateries.
Little fishing boats and further out, yachts are strewn along the calm cove. In the mid-day the sun hangs effortlessly above to allow for a picture perfect tan. When your ready to dip into the shallow teal ocean, gently watch your step as you may unexpectedly be greeted by some rocks undertow. Floating gently through the unruffled waves with sunglasses on, you’ll definitely feel on top of the world. Be aware of a rather little steep walk up towards the sand. At the end of your beach day don’t be too surprised if much of the sand you’ve collected along your body sticks to you; like a familiar tattoo as its very adhesive, but who doesn’t like taking a tiny peace of beach heaven back home for the ride.
Grand Case is A beach made for everyone, intimate privacy or perfectly suitable for a family oriented fun filled day. Come all and none will leave disappointed.
