Cupecoy Beach

By Jeff Berger

“Cupecoy Beach” is actually a string of Dutch Side beaches at the island's westernmost corner. They are some of the most majestic beaches on the island, lying sprawled out beneath high sandstone cliffs and deep caves carved out from years of wave and ocean erosion. One of the interesting dividends resulting from this erosion is very beautiful and rather grainy gold-white beach sand that is great for walking upon or building sandcastles. These sands occasionally shift, changing the complexion and size of the shoreline -- there may be room for 300 people one day, and barely room for 30 the next.

Cupecoy has been mostly clothing optional by tradition, and no one at the moment seems to be interfering with that. The beach’s southern end fronts a number of hotels – from Cupecoy Beach Club to Ocean Club – and that area is not clothing optional. Beyond that point, an all-over tan is yours for the enjoying.

Best car access: go into the lot next to Ocean Club and drive west on the dirt road that begins there until you see a number of parked cars. That’s “baby” beach. Cement stairs help you descend to the beach, but wear sneakers or other shoes that grip well.

The farthest beach, next to Shore Point condominiums, is a very short ride farther west along the shore. Keep your clothes on in the parking lot, but the beach – that’s another matter. When the beach has sand, it’s very pleasant, but sometimes it’s devoid of sand and lounges enhance your comfort.

When you visit either beach, say hello for us to John and Dany, who offer chair and umbrella rentals on the beach as well as bar service to your lounge or blanket. Lunches are available too.
