Baie Rouge

If you’re looking for that little out of the way beach, that special place reserved for those in the know, then Baie Rouge (Bay Rouge) is the perfect spot.  Tucked in to the Westerly corner of St Marin, in between the Lowlands and Sandy Ground over on the French side, Baie Rouge is a little piece of heaven, perfect for a day at the beach or just a delicious unhurried lunch.

The first thing you’ll notice about Baie Rouge is the beach sand, it’s spectacular, and different from all the other sand on St Martin.  The sand is mostly made of coral and has very large grains, further, the color is a rust/pink hue, giving the beach a sun kissed glow and of course the name due to that “Rouge” look.   Stretching about two miles, Baie Rouge has only one pubic entrance and parking area, and also at that same area, two lovely beachside restaurants that have chaise lounge chairs and umbrellas for all customers.  Of course you are also welcome to bring your own chair and umbrella or just throw down a towel on a secluded spot of your own choosing.    

Once you’re situated, you will want to go for a swim in the crystal clear waters.  As you stand on the beach looking across the Anguilla straight you are sure to see great sailing vessels darting about in the wind and the Southeastern end of the island of Anguilla, it’s breathtaking.  For the majority of the year, the beach break at Baie Rouge is very tame and swimming is a true pleasure.  Occasionally the wind kicks up during hurricane season, from June-October and you get a few waves.  Make a note, there are some large boulders nestled in the sand at the wave breakpoint, but they are not dangerous.

After your swim, head back to your lounge chair and enjoy the sun, and whenever you’re ready, select one of the charming restaurants and have a snack, lunch or early dinner.  Gus’ Beach Bar & Grill is on the right side, and Chez Raymon is on the left side.  Both serve delicious grilled fish and meats, succulent salads and tasty deserts.  You may take a table in the shade or have the meal brought to your lounge, it’s up to you.

Getting to Baie Rouge is quite easy, from the Dutch side, you take the Airport road all the way past Maho, then past Cupe Coy, and hop over the border to the French side, travel about two miles or so and on the left hand side, just as you get to a corner you will see the sign Baie Rouge.  Take a left and drive carefully up the dirt road to the large parking area.  Park there and take the stairs down to the beach and enjoy your day!
